Insertion of theses in international academic journals every year after continuous presentations of excellent theses by faculty students Joint researches by undergraduate & graduate senior & junior students … positioning as the tradition of the department by passing down unique research power [April 25, 2023] <Research team of YU Department of Chemistry (From the left, researchers SON Nam-gyu, MOON Ho-jun, and KIM Soo-jeong)> It’s a hot topic that there is a department of which undergraduate students publish theses every year in renowned international journals. YU Department of Chemistry has continuously shown such world-level research performances.Students of the department have been inserting theses in major renown academic journals in chemistry and material science areas, etc. every year.The undergraduate & graduate students made fairly large joint research performances.By leading by senior students and by following by junior students, they pass down unique research power as the tradition of the department. This time, the thesis is the research performance on zinc sulfide (ZnS) composites related with production of hydrogen that is attracting attention as a next-generation energy source.From YU Graduate School of Chemistry, MOON Ho-jun (Master's 1st term) and KIM Su-jeong (Master's 3rd term) participated as the first authors and Professor KANG Mi-suk and Researcher SON Nam-gyu (Ph.D completion) participated as corresponding authors.Especially, the first author MOON Ho-jun was in his fourth year of undergraduate studies at the time of writing this thesis and had inserted a thesis in another international academic journal last year, too.This thesis was inserted in the most recent version (April, 2023) of Nano Today that is an international academic journal in nano technology with 18.96 of Impact factor (IF) and at 5.36% of upper level. The research team produced zinc sulfide (ZnS) composites showing various shapes and selective performances with use of many additives similar with ethylenediamine which is mostly used to control catalysis synthesis. It was found that an additive among the used additives enhanced productivity of hydrogen to be generated when decomposing water with solar light and another additive enhanced productivity of methane (CH4) through conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2). Hydrogen energy attracts attention because small volume may generate a large power. Now, most of hydrogen is generated by reforming methane with hot steam but this method has a problem that 10kg of carbon dioxide is generated when 1kg of hydrogen is generated. The performance of this research attracts attention because it suggests a resolution of such problem. The first author MOON Ho-jun said, “It was found in this research that, when hydrogen is generated with use of zinc sulfide synthesized with use of specific additives, hydrogen is only generated as the byproduct.Various materials were added in synthesis of zinc sulfide and unique properties of each composite were identified in this research,” and said his future research plan, “I’d like to conduct lithium ion batteries or fuel batteries that are environment-friendly energy materials over optical catalysis.” Meanwhile, the research conducted by YU Department of Chemistry was conducted as a mid-level researcher support project of National Research Foundation of Korea.

Operation of Employee Scholarship Association with accumulation of each 1% of salaries … Donation of KRW 830 million of scholarship until now Selection of scholarship students since 2009 and transfer of KRW 550 million of scholarship Selection of about 10 scholarship students every year and transfer of KRW 1 million evert semester [May 03, 2023] Employees of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) donated KRW 100 million as student scholarship. The employees gathered each 1% of their salaries every month. YU staff has been operating Employee Scholarship Association with accumulation of each 1% of salaries since 2008.Until now, they donated KRW 830 million as scholarship fund since 2008 and, in the amount, about KRW 550 million was transferred to students as scholarship. At 3:00 on the 3rd, Chairman KWON Ki-yeong of YU Employee Scholarship Association met President CHOI Oe-chool and delivered scholarship fund. Chairman KWON Ki-yeong of YU Employee Scholarship Association said, “Employees have been gathering certain amount from monthly salaries every month in order to help students to study as the university members.YU Employee Scholarship Association is meaningful because employees have been voluntarily participating for 15 years. We will do the best to gather the wills of employees, to make a developed scholarship association, and to give practical help to students.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “I always thank the employees for their silent contributions and endeavors for the development of the university and students at their respective positions.Especially, I thank them for their excellent capability in the process to implement large national projects recently.It is never a easy job to gather the wills of them and to operate the scholarship association.I’d like express encouragement and respect in the aspect that the employees have been operating the scholarship operation with one mind for 15 years. I will do my best so that students may study in a better environment to meet the valuable will of the employees.” Meanwhile, YU Employee Scholarship Association selected 14 scholarship students and transferred KRW 1 million to each of them in 2009 as the start and has been selecting about 10 scholarship students and has been transferring scholarship. Until now, 98 scholarship students were selected until now and, in May this year, scholarship students will be selected and, in June, scholarship will be delivered.Especially, KRW 200 million of special scholarship was given to whole students who were suffered from KOVID-19 in 2020.

Evaluated as the 1st or 2nd level in Vietnam by world university evaluations such as THE and QS, etc. Request for sharing education including opening of Department of Saemaul Economic Development and major in Korean language, etc. Agreed in rapid practical exchange and cooperation between two universities through “Special Cooperation Committee” [April 19, 2023] <President Le Nguyen Bao of Duy Tân University of Vietnam suggests a plan for cooperation with YU> Department of Saemaul will be opened in Duy Tân University, the highest level university in Vietnam.This is the 3rd country next to Philippine and Cambodia that Saemaul Studies, traditional Korean studies, is exported and as many as more than 10 universities of Southeastern Asia, Central Asia, Africa, and Central Latin America requested installation of Department of Saemaul to YU. Duy Tân University was founded in 1994 in Danang, Vietnam.It is the largest private university in Vietnam which has about 32,000 students.Duy Tân University was evaluated as one of 401st-500th universities in 2023 World University Evaluation by Times Higher Education (THE) of GB, the highest level in Vietnamese universities, and was ranked 2nd in Vietnam in GB QS Asia University Rankings. In the afternoon on the 17th, 19 high-level personnel and practical workers including Chief Director Le Cong Co, President Le Nguyen Bao, and Vice-President of Duy Tân University, professors and deans of major colleges, and main staff and personnel of personnel affairs, finance, and administration visited YU.They started aggressive actions for practical exchange with YU. <YU and Duy Tân University of Vietnam started exchange and cooperation including installation of local Department of Saemaul Economic Development.> (From the 4th in the left, President Le Nguyen Bao, Chief Director Le Cong Co, and President CHOI Oe-chool) Chief Director Le Cong Co met President CHOI Oe-chool of YU on that day and said, “Cooperation between both countries has been growing in various social areas including economy through launch of business by large enterprises such as Samsung and LG in Vietnam. This is my 5th visit of Korea and is the 1st time for me to visit YU. I visited YU for exchange and cooperation in educational area for cultivation of both countries’ talents. I hope that my visit of YU is the starting point of regular exchange between both countries.” President CHOI Oe-chool also started actions for exchange with Duy Tân University including installation of Department of Saemaul Economic Development. President CHOI Oe-chool opened a channel of practical exchange for both universities by delivering a special lecture in front of the visiting team of Duy Tân University.They had discussions on installation of Department of Saemaul Economic Development and execution of Korean major 2+2 double degree system in Duy Tân University.If Department of Saemaul Economic Development and execution of Korean major 2+2 double degree system are launched at the same time in the largest private university in Vietnam, it will become the base to share Vietnamese local education. With installation of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Duy Tân University, exchange will be expanded in various academic areas.During this visit of YU, agreements were made on exchanges of faculty and graduate school students and professors and joint researches, etc. between both universities.Both universities have a plan for rapid practical cooperation with Special Cooperation Committee (tentative name) for embodiment of details for practical exchange. President CHOI Oe-chool said, “More than 9,000 Korean enterprises run their business in Vietnam and the exchange is active. Cultivation of talents through this academic exchange will become the foundation for overall exchange and cooperation by both countries including society, culture, and economy. YU will make active support for active exchange in various areas for both universities and for talent cultivation including installation of Department of Saemaul Economic Development. I hope both universities to gather energy for talent cultivation for joint prosperity of human society over talent cultivation to lead development of both countries.” Meanwhile, YU and Vietnam have been implementing active cooperation projects for last 10 years. YU concluded an agreement with Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics in 2014 and suggested policies by conducting a study to compare Vietnamese new agricultural village programs with Korean Saemaul Undong in 2015. Also, YU provided education and regional administration system consulting for 762 public officers of Lao Cai Province, Vietnam through Regional Administrative Capability Strengthening Education Project from December 2014 to February 2018. This time is highly meaningful in the respect that two private universities of Korean and Vietnam cooperate in academic exchange and talent cultivation.

Sharing the meaning of sublime donation with university members and citizens … expectation of social expansion of donation culture Operation of differentiated donor respect programs such as donor classrooms and Chunma Honors [April 19, 2023] Chunma Honors Park, a donor respect park, was constructed in YU Campus (President CHOI Oe-chool). The purpose is to respect major donors for university development and to expand social donation culture by sharing the meaning of sublime donation with university members and citizens. YU plans to name plates, face relievo copper plates, busts, and seated statues of donors and use them as a honor dedication space to keep donors’ will for sharing. Some busts of major donors were moved from aside of YU Central Library. Chunma Honors Park was constructed in the forest between YU Main Building and Foreign Language Education Center.A circular plaza, memorial stone, sitting walls, decorative walls, and trails were constructed in 11,700㎡ (3,510pyeong) of area. Beautiful scenery and lightings were also installed for day & night rest places. The circular plaza at the center has a space for cultural performances including busking, etc. It is constructed at opposite position of Mirror Lake from YU Chunma Daero and is expected to be used as the rest places for university members including students and citizens. <Scenery of Chunma Honors Park, a donor respect park of YU> YU held the completion ceremony for Chunma Honors Park in the morning on the 19th. Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, directors, and President CHOI Oe-chool of YU, etc. attended. President CHOI Oe-chool said, “It is the most important to remember the warm mind and values of donors.I want all members of YU to keep the mind of thank by maintaining the meaning of [Thinking about the source of drinking water]. Samsung Electronics’ C-Lab Outside Gyeongbuk opened in YU Campus on the 13th. C-Lab Outside is an excellent startup cultivation & support program that has been operated by Samsung Electronics since 2018. Especially, YU is the first case that Samsung Electronics’ C-Lab Outside is installed in a college campus.The performances of education and researches of YU and the industry-academy cooperation network and knowhow of YU were externally recognized.Therefore, YU is expected to play the role of the hub of venture startup ecosystem as well as local talent cultivation. Five enterprises were selected as the subjects for concentrated cultivation for “Samsung Electronics’ C-Lab Outside Gyeongbuk” and will move. Consultation on expansion of Mongolian students between Erdenetsogt Sarantogos (Mongolian Ambassador to Korea) and President CHOI Oe-chool Mongolian national development policy is consistent with core values of the Saemaul Undong … Requirement for close cooperation with YU [April 3, 2023] <Erdenetsogt Sarantogos (4th from the left, Mongolian Ambassador to Korea) met President CHOI Oe-chool and had a discussion on talent cultivation plans including Mongolian students’ abroad-study, etc.> YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) started invitation of Mongolian students. This year, Mongolian students studying at YU have significantly increased.As of April 2023, a total of 57 students are enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and Korean language education centers. Especially, as the Mongolian Embassy in Korea is showing great interest in attracting Mongolian students to YU more Mongolian students will study at YU. On March 23rd, Erdenetsogt Sarantogos, Ambassador of Mongolia to Korea, visited YU. She attended the Spring International Conference of the Korean Mongolian Society held at the YU’s LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall. Before the conference, Ambassador Erdenetsogt Sarantogos met President CHOI Oe-chool of YU. Ambassador Erdenetsogt Sarantogos met President CHOI and agreed that there is a need for practical cooperation between Mongolia and Korea in various fields, such as the necessity of Mongolia's Saemaul development project and implementation erosion control projects in Mongolia that is suffering from climate change and accelerated desertification. Especially, Ambassador Erdenetsogt Sarantogos was highly interested in cultivation of talents including Mongolian students’ study at YU. President CHOI said, “Professionals of Korean development experiences and Saemaul development area will play large roles in Mongolian development. Especially, officials of Mongolian central government and local governments will show synergy effects in establishment and execution of national development policies if they are equipped with the capability and professionality of Saemaul development. We will aggressively help Mongolian officials for their study in YU. YU will play the role to cultivate Mongolian talents as well as officials.” Ambassador Erdenetsogt Sarantogos said, “Mongolia's national development policy is consistent with core values of Saemaul Undong. Yu’s aggressive cooperation is required because its expertise in education, research, and talent cultivation for Saemaul development is internationally recognized. I will make recommendations so that Mongolian talents may study at YU. I hope Mongolian Embassy and YU to have close cooperation for expansion of exchanges between the two countries including Mongolian development. Meanwhile, Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (PSPS) of YU was established in 2011 to cultivate Saemaul leaders of developing countries. Foreigner students studying in PSPS consist of public officials planning policies in respective countries, employees of public institutions, social activists, and professional workers, etc. differently from students of faculties or graduate schools. Until now, Seven persons (6 graduates, and 1 completion student) from Mongolia studied in the PSPS and returned to work as Saemaul development experts.

Undergraduate and graduate students belonging to the Smart Power System Research Lab - Development of a new type power flow calculation program Ranked 1st out of 19 participating teams nationwide [March 31, 2023] <Undergraduate and graduate researchers from Smart Power System Research Lab of YU Department of Electrical Engineering> Students of YU Department of Electrical Engineering won first place in “13th Electric Power Industry Software Contest.” The contest was held by Power Technology Division of Korean Electrical Society for power system analysis and application software program development and for the development of power industry-related software and advances into overseas markets. In the 13th Contest held last year, LEE Yoon-seon (graduate school), NAM Jeong-hwan, YOO Yeon-soo, CHOI Won-il, and HWANGBO Jeong-min (undergraduate) from YU Department of Electrical Engineering, belonging to Smart Power System Research Lab (advisor: Professor LEE Sang-bong) of YU Department of Electrical Engineering, won the gold prize by placing first among 19 participating teams nationwide. Their work is AC/DC hybrid power flow calculation using (Newton-Raphson & SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming). Power flow calculation program is used to show in what state the active power and reactive power generated by the generator flow into the power system and what distribution the voltage or current represents at each point in the power system at this time. Especially, in this contest, power flow analysis of AC/DC hybrid system (Integrated AC/DC system) was asked. The team of YU Department of Electrical Engineering programmed two calculation methods, i.e. Newton-Raphson & SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming, for power flow calculation of AC/DC hybrid system. Also, the team compared commercial AC systems with an integrated system for higher suitability. LEE Yoon-seon (graduate school master's course) said, “Power loss may be reduced with economic and efficient operation of power system and Efficient operation of AC/DC hybrid system is possible with application of renewable energy sources. As the result, it is expected to be the foundation of industrial development due to increased available power as well as reduced electric charge.” Smart Power System Research Lab of YU Department of Electrical Engineering intends to improve system analysis method by modeling renewable energy sources and DC equipment and to conduct research on development of economic efficiency evaluation models in consideration of equipment costs and line loss in case of change to an integrated system.

YU, Tree planting ahead of Arbor Day Planting 36 5-year-old Hovenia dulcis grown in the campus nursery field, hosted by Department of Forest Resources More than 150 participants, including students, professors, and foreigner students [March 31, 2023] YU had a tree planting event ahead of Arbor Day (April 5th). The tree planting event was hosted by YU Department of Forest Resources in Gapje Haksullim of YU Gyeongsan Campus at 10:00 am on the 31st. They planted 36 5-year-old Hovenia dulcis grown in about 1,000㎡ of the campus nursery field. In the tree planting event, more than 150 students and professors from YU Department of Forest Resources participated. Especially, foreigner students of YU PSPS participated in the events and had the time to experience forest rehabilitation and forest restoration based on Saemaul Undong. Dean LEE Do-hyeong of YU Department of Forest Resources planned the tree planting event and said, “I hope students to have the opportunity to remember the meaning of Arbor Day by planting trees. I hope to make a culture to pass richer environment to future generations by activating tree planting everywhere as well as YU.”
