YU jumped two places from 18th last year. Recently reported “THE World University Rankings 2023” included 1,799 universities in 104 countries of the world.In case of Korea, 37 universities including YU, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and KAIST, etc. included in the ranking list. Ewha Womans University and Kyungpook National University as well as YU ranked 16th in Korea. THE established in 1971 is one of the most prestigious global university evaluation institutions in the world and has been reporting world university ranking every year since 2004.Universities are evaluated based on five indexes such as Educational condition(30%), Research performance (30%), Thesis citation count (30%), Globalization (7.5%), and Industrial research budgets (2.5%). Especially, THE ranking is recognized as having high credibility worldwide as strict standard is applied focused in research and educational conditions rather than reputation of universities. Evaluation by “2022 Leiden Ranking” reported in June is further surprising. YU ranked 6th in the overall ranking, a jump from 14th last year.YU showed unrivaled research power with 1st domestic rank for consecutive eight years in the area of mathematics & computer science.Especially, world rank in the area of mathematics & computer science is significantly elevated.World-level research power of YU was recognized with 55th in 1,318 evaluated universities and with 14th in 561 Asian universities.Also, YU showed elevated ranking in most academic areas including domestic 7th in life and earth sciences and domestic 16th in natural science and engineering area.Leiden Ranking evaluates ranking of world universities based on qualitative levels of theses to show research power. Hecon contributed to national economic growth through development of Korean tool industry.The ceremony to confer honorary doctor of engineering to Chairman CHOI was held in LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall on 3rd floor of YU Cheonma Art Center at 1:00 pm on the 19th. Chairman CHOI walked a single way of tool industry for more than 50 years with establishment of a responsible guarantee tool company in Daegu in 1971 and founded Cretec, the domestically largest industrial tool distribution company.Cretec is supplied with more than 130,000 items of more than 1,200 domestic/foreign brands and supplies more than 9,000 domestic distributers with them.He contributed to rapid growth of domestic tool industry by systemizing information on diverse industrial tools, by applying standard price system and barcode system for the first in tool industry, by digitalizing product information, and by settling scientific distribution network in domestic tool industry.He is recognized to grow the domestically largest industrial tool distribution company with his expert in practical knowledge and field as a businessman and with excellent management capability by accomplishing customer satisfaction with his management philosophy, “Sincere, honesty and responsible spirit.” As described above, Chairman CHOI has been developing distribution area of domestic industrial tools, was selected as a “New Intellectual” by Small and Medium Business Administration in 2000, received Prime Minister’s Award as a National Excellent Capital Goods Development Company in 2009, and received National Quality Management Competition Industrial Medal and Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit as well as Corporate Innovation Award, proving his contribution in national industrial development. MOON Ho-joon and KOH Myeong-seok, 4th grade of Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Insertion of a theses in international academic journals Performance of research on production of next-generation energy source hydrogen using a photocatalyst Recognition of global research power with presentation of excellent theses by students every year [October 21, 2022] <MOON Ho-joon and KOH Myeong-seok, 4th grade of Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who reported theses to international journals> Students of YU Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry inserted their theses as lead authors in famous international academic journals.Such faculty students inserted their theses in international academic journals every year and their research power is internationally recognized. This year, two faculty students from Professor KANG Mi-sook’s Library of YU Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry inserted their theses. The heroes areMOON Ho-joon and KOH Myeong-seok, 4th grade of Faculty.Student MOON Ho-joon’s thesis was determined to be inserted in Applied Surface Science (Impactor Factor: 7.392), a famous international journal in material science, in December and was opened on line in advance and Student KOH Myeong-seok’s thesis was inserted in International Journal of Hydrogen Energy (Impactor Factor: 7.139). The researches of the two students are related with production of hydrogen, one of next-generation pure energy sources. Student MOON Ho-joon’s thesis is the research on high-performance catalytic synthesis of hydrogen through hydrolysis using solar light. MOON Ho-joon said, “I enhance performances by combining several different catalysis in many researches. However, this time, I enhanced hydrogen production performance with use of a catalyst. Now, most of hydrogen is produced methane and hot steam. For production of 1kg of hydrogen, as large as 10kg of carbon dioxide, a kind of greenhouse gases, is generated. However, the catalyst synthesized in this research is eco-friendly and has large economic effect because it produces hydrogen and oxygen without byproducts.” Student KOH Myeong-seok’s thesis is related with hydrolysis with synthesis of a catalyst. KOH Myeong-seok said, “It was found through the research that hydrolysis performance is significantly enhanced when radiating light on combined photocatalyst of Cadmium sulfide (CdS) and iron sulfide (FeS₂) rather than a catalyst. Also, this photocatalyst showed high stability and traceability in recycling tests.” Such faculty students showed research performances early in faculty and intend to expand their researches.MOON Ho-joon said, “I’d like to conduct researches on fuel cells and lithium ion cells that collect interest as eco-friendly materials. Follow-up researches are planned for electrochemical catalysis.I want to conduct researches on hydrogen evolution reactions to generate more hydrogen by developing anode catalysts.If possible, I want to conduct researches on fuel cells and secondary cells, too.”

Room 364 of Machinery Hall, Designation as a lecture room in the name of CEO YOON Sang-myeong of Dongnam HiTech Class 79 Alumnus of Department of Marine Engineering (currently, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering), Contribution in development of the university and society Support of junior’s learning with donation of KRW 300 million for scholarship last year [October 12, 2022] A lecture room is designated with the name of CEO YOON Sang-myeong (62) of Dongnam HiTech in YU (President CHOI Oe-chool). He donated large amount of development fund to the university and contributed to social development as a businessman. On the 12th, a naming copper plate unveiling ceremony (YOON Sang-myeong’s Lecture Room in YU Machinery Hall) was held in Room 364 of Machinery Hall. A naming copper plate showing the face relievo, main history, and performances of CEO YOON was put on the right wall of the lecture room door. CEO YOON is Class 79 alumnus of YU PARK Yong Department of Marine Engineering (currently, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering). After graduation in 1986, he served as the president of Keumsung Precision Research Institute and, after establishment of Dongnam Mold in 2000, established and has been operating Dongnam HiTech (Dalseong-gun, Daegu), an injection mold and injection molded products manufacturing company, since 2005. CEO YOON has been donating development fund to YU and has been practicing sharing since 2003. Last year, he donated KRW 300 million of scholarship for juniors of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.In 2004, he received commendation of Chairman of Korea Federation of SMEs and was selected as a member of YU Chunma Honors in 2021. CEO YOON attended the ceremony and said, “I have been keeping a mind to repay the benefits of the university since graduation from the university and start of social life. I just donated little by little as a small act, but I don't know where to put my body because a classroom with my name is designated here on campus. I hope this classroom will become the foundation for students to dream and study. I will continue to work hard so that my alma mater can develop and add a small force to the growth of my juniors.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “It is highly helpful for development of the university to play a role as a businessman and to contribute in development of society but, furthermore, CEO YOON makes tangible and intangible support for alma master and juniors and I thank him. I’d like to express my thanks to the family members attended here. The entrepreneurship and will of a large donation of CEO YOON will be transmitted to juniors studying in “YOON Sang-myeong’s Lecture Room” in full. I will do my best so that YU students may grow to be the talents to contribute in human society over contribution in social development.” YU has been operating lecture rooms having donators’ names of large amount of university development fund since 2018. The purpose is to respect those who have contributed to development of the university and society and to encourage a culture of donation. Meanwhile, at the unveiling ceremony on the same day, the award ceremony for “YOON Sang-myeong Scholarship” was also held. “YOON Sang-myeong Scholarship” is operated with the scholarship fund donated by CEO YOON and one student will be selected from Faculty of Machinery Engineering and supported every year since this year.

Three times of performances in YU Cheonma Art Center for two days on September 30th and October 1st Presenting high-quality opera performances by professors and students of College of Music and alumni working in Korea or foreign countries [October 1, 2022] YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) put Puccini's Opera “La Bohème” on the stage at 75th anniversary. The opera performances were managed by YU College of Music and were made three times in Grand Hall of YU Cheonma Art Center at 7:30 pm on September 30th (Friday) and at 3:00 and 7:30 pm on October 1st (Saturday). “La Bohème” has the most lyricism among Puccini’s 12 works. The opera consists of four acts showing the love and tragedy between four Bohemians consisting of a painter, novelist, musician, philosopher, and their lovers living a rough and free life in Latin, France. Professors of College of Music, graduates working in Korea or foreign countries, and students gathered for the performances in order to commemorate the 75th anniversary of YU. YU’s 75th Anniversary Festival Orchestra (Concertmaster: Professor KIM Yi-jeong of Instrumental Music), College of Music Choir (Conductor: Professor HAN Yong-hee of Vocal Music), and Cheonma Youth Squire (Conductor: Alumnus KWON Yu-jin) showed magnificent and beautiful performances under conduction by LEE Il-ku (Maestro from YU) and PYO Hyeon-jin, Korea's best director, took in charge of direction. The male lead Rodolfo's aria “Your Admiration,” the female protagonist Mimi's aria “My name is Mimi,” “Musetta's Waltz,” and the arias having familiar beautiful melodies were presented to the audience through beautiful stage direction and comprehensive audiovisual art. In this opera, professors KIM Jeong-ah and LEE Hyun, both of the top vocalists in Korea, from YU Department of Vocal Music played the roles of Mimi and poet Rodolfo, respectively, professor LEE Dong-hwan and soprano LEE Gyeong-jin played the roles of painter Marcello and Musetta, respectively, and baritone SEO Jeong-hyeok and bassist YOON Seong-woo played the roles of musician Shonar, Philosopher Colline, respectively. Dean CHOI Yoon-hee of YU College of Music in charge of art director said, “The best work was produced by the loyalty and pride of the alma master in the process to produce the work by seniors and juniors of YU for the university anniversary opera.” The performances were shown in Grand Hall of YU Cheonma Art Center three times by professor team on September 30th and by two student teams on October 1st. The performances were supported by YU, YU Medical Center, and Alumni Association of YU College of Music.

Especially, KIM Ji-yeong, a player of YU Ssireum Club took 1st place in her second partition in Ssireum item after participation in Gangreung Dano Competition held in May. Manager HEO Yong of YU Ssireum Club said, “Current environment of female ssireum is very good. However, the player group is very small compared with the environment and many opportunities will be given to female players for selection of their courses. Player KIM Ji-yeong is at armature level but she will be able to act as a player of judo or ssireum after graduation if she tries more in training. Symbol of 70 years’ tradition of Faculty of Architecture, A space for students for education and rest Collection of construction funds by Class 80 Graduates Completion of the best level pavilion with supervision of whole courses by Great Wood Craftsman KIM Beom-sik, Gyeongbuk Intangible Cultural Asset [September 30th, 2022] <Signboard hanging ceremony for “Geonwoojeong” of YU Faculty of Architecture> YU Faculty of Architecture (Dean KANG Ju-won) constructed Geonwoojeong, a traditional type pavilion and had its signboard hanging ceremony on September 29th to commemorate 70th anniversary of the faculty. Geonwoojeong was constructed to symbolize 70 years’ tradition of Faculty of Architecture and to provide students with a space for education and rest and is placed between YU Gyeongsan Campus Architectural Building and auditorium of College of Engineering.For construction of Geonwoojeong, ten graduates of Class 80 participated in collection of the construction fund. It took two months to construct Geonwoojeong and Great Wood Craftsman KIM Beom-sik, Gyeongbuk Intangible Cultural Asset 37, supervised whole courses with wood processing and completed the best pavilion. Professor KWON Jong-wook of YU Faculty of Architecture, who managed preparations for and progress of the construction, said, “The education and research capability of YU Faculty of Architecture is internationally recognized. Construction of the pavilion was planned to provide students with the opportunities to experience traditional architecture every day. I hope to give them an opportunity to feel a new shape of the campus through Geonwoojeong having a unique traditional architectural shape in YU Campus fulfilled with modern buildings.”

An excellent-research-professor respecting program <YU’RE Honors>, Awarded “Excellent Research Teacher of the Year” Professors YOON Jeong-hyeon (Business Administration), KIM Il-guk (Plastic Surgery, College of Medicine), PARK Han-woo (Media Information), and PARK Joo-hyeon (Electrical Engineering) Research costs and administrative support to each two new and mid-level researches every year [September 22, 2022] <Professors selected as excellent research faculty of 2022 in YU’s “YU’RE Honors”> (From the second in the left, President CHOI Oe-chool and professors PARK Joo-hyeon, PARK Han-woo, and YOON Jeong-hyeon) Professors of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) who made excellent research performances receive unprecedented support from universities. YU started to significantly expand support of excellent-research professors and to strengthen colleges’ research power through <YU’RE Honors> program. <YU’RE Honors> was adopted in 2021 to seek for professors who made excellent research performances and inform their performances to the outside and to maximize professors’ research potential with equipment of systematic administrative & financial support system for dedication to researches. Four professors consisting of each two professors in new and middle-level researchers are selected. Following last year, “Excellent research faculty of 2022” were selected and, on the 22nd, the awards ceremony was held and plaques and prizes were awarded.In new researcher part, Professor YOON Jeong-hyeon (Department of Business Administration) and Professor KIM Il-guk (Department of Plastic Surgery, College of Medicine) were selected and, in middle-level researcher part, Professor PARK Han-woo (Department of Media Information) and Professor PARK Joo-hyeon (Department of Electrical Engineering) were selected. Especially, Professor PARK Han-woo and Professor PARK Joo-hyeon got the honor of awards for consecutive two years following last year. Professors selected as “excellent research faculty” are first supported with research costs and are supplied with administrative support service with arrangement of exclusive staff. Also, if a professor is selected as “an excellent research faculty” three times, he/she will be permanently displayed in “Industry-Academy Cooperation Foundation Hall of Fame.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “YU surprised the academic society by ranking 6th in domestic overall ranking in Leiden Ranking 2022 to evaluate universities of the world based on research power. World-level research power of YU was accepted by ranking 55th in world ranking as well as ranking 1st in mathematics and computer area for 8 consecutive years in domestic ranking. Endeavors of professors who have devoted to researches made fruits and accepted by international societies. YU will make active support by constructing educational and research infrastructure and improving systems continuously so that sweats of professors may illuminate.” Professor YOON Jeong-hyeon, who was selected in new researcher part, obtained doctorate degree of business administration (organizational behavior) in University of Newcastle Upon Tyne under Russell Group of GB and was appointed as a professor by YU in September 2018. Professor YOON was qualified as an Entrepreneurship Education Facilitator by Kauffman Foundation of the USA when he was working as a professor of POSTECH before being appointed by YU. Such qualification means that he may issue certificates of completion in the name of the Kaufman Foundation to students. Now, he serves as an operation member of Daegu Economic Council, operation member of Disaster Fund Management Committee, consulting member of Job Project of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, representative consultant of Gyeongsangbuk-do Job Target Disclosure System, and chairman of Customer Rights Committee of Daegu/Gyeongbuk HQ of Korea Federation of SMEs, etc. He contributes in transfer of excellent technology to enterprises and commercialization of it which is possessed by the university by serving as the chairman of Technology Transfer and Commercialization Center and as the Executive Director of Technology Holding Company. He inserted more than 40 theses and research reports in domestic/foreign main academic journals in the areas of entrepreneurship, technology management, innovation, network, and conflict management, etc. and published such books as Management Organization Theory, ‘Entrepreneurship at a Glance, and Labor-Management Relations Theory, etc. Recently, he received Best Paper Award in SOItmC (Society of Open Innovation, Technology, Market & Complexity), an international academic conference related with technology management & open innovation. Professor KIM Il-guk obtained doctorate degree in YU and plastic surgeon in YU Medical Center, obtained doctorate degree in KAIST Graduate School of Medical Sciences, and was appointed as a professor of YU in September, 2018. He obtained doctorate degree in KAIST Graduate School of Medical Sciences for the second time in domestic plastic surgeons and served as a clinical lecturer in Seoul National University Hospital. His research power is accepted through many theses inserted in international academic journals such as Cancer Cell which is a worldwide famous cancer journal, JEM (Journal of Experimental Medicine), and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery which is an OS sciences journal of the USA. In 2019, he reported successful treatment result of an anaplastic large cell lymphoma patient related with breast implant which occurred for the first time in Korea. He had served as the Manager of New Medical Scientists Part of Innovative Physician Scientist Cultivation Project Team and is working as a core researcher of Leading Research Center Support Project as the Principal Investigator of middle-level linkage follow-up research. Professor PARK Han-woo, who was selected in middle-level researchers, obtained doctorate degree in State University of New York (Buffalo) and, after Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW), was appointed as a professor of YU in March 2003. He had served as a Visiting Scholar of Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and Chairman of YU WCU Webbometrics Project Team. He is recognized as a world authority who seeks for political, election, cultural, scientific, technological, and environmental issues hidden in big data by the method of social meaning linkage network. He serves as a consultant and editing member of TFSC (Technological Forecasting & Social Change) and BDS (Big Data & Society). Professor PARK is participating in “YU BK21 + Glocal East Asia Cultural Contents Project Group” and is highly interested in cultivation of next generation of academics and globalization of East Asia. Professor PARK Joo-hyeon obtained doctorate degree of engineering in Pohang University of Science and Technology was appointed as a professor of YU in March 2000. Professor PARK has been making active research activities including insertion of more than 150 theses in international academic journals for recent three years. Especially, his research performances were recognized by the world as citation count of such theses exceeds 36,700 and more than 93 theses were cited more than 100 times. He was continuously selected for consecutive 7 years since 2015 until last year as “the most influential researchers of the world” selected by Clarivate Analytics, i.e. the researcher who Hs theses being cited at higher 1% level (in terms of number of researchers, Highly Cited Researchers (HCR) who belong to 0.1%). Especially, he was selected as HCR in the most areas (engineering, computer science, and mathematics) for consecutive 3 years from 2019 to 2021 and researchers who were overlapped in 3 areas were 11 persons in 2019, 9 persons in 2020, and 23 persons in 2021; Professor PARK is the only Korean researcher who was selected so. Professor PARK was selected as a regular member of Korea Academy of Science and Technology in 2017 and is working as an editing member in many international academic journals including IEEE (Transactions on Cybernetics).

University Headquarter and Student Council started collection of money for “With YU students’ social contribution fund.” Experiencing value of “social contribution” with direct participation in small-amount donation … “Making social contribution activities a daily life” Participation of university members to achieve the vision of “A creative and innovative university to contribute in prosperity of human society” [September 16, 2022] Students of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) started social contribution activities by gathering pocket money. YU started raising “With YU students’ social contribution fund” from second semester in 2022. The purse is to let students enhance the sense of belonging and school spirit and feel the importance and value of social contribution by participating in fund raising for social contribution through donation of small amount of money. Especially, “With YU students’ social contribution fund” was made by University Headquarter and Student Council (Chairman, KANG Tae-wook). The purpose is active participation of university members to achieve the vision of “A creative and innovative university to contribute in prosperity of human society” put by YU this year. Chairman KANG Tae-wook of YU Student Council said, “The value of sharing will be expanded in the campus by the method that students participate social contribution activities with donation of small amount of money as little as a cup of coffee. I hope many students participate and the good influence started in the university campus is expanded to every place of the society.” Any YU students may participate in “With YU students’ social contribution fund.” Participation is possible with regular donation or one-time donation after online agreement in the website of YU Development Fund (loveyu.yu.ac.kr). “With YU students’ social contribution fund” will be used by YU Social Contribution Team organized this year. It will be used for global service activities as well as domestic social contribution activities including material purchase and donation, etc. for service activities linked with local voluntary service centers, etc. Also, various social contribution programs for support of education and lectures to expand social contribution in the university and for industry-academy contribution activities, etc. will be made. President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said his expectation, “I think that, if all members agree in the vision of the university and try together, the vision will be achieved. In this respect, the activities for “With YU students’ social contribution fund” are highly meaningful. A small sharing activity started in the campus will become a springboard for social contribution activities to contribute in development and win-win of local societies over the campus.”
