  1- 1	ENGLISH READING This course is aimed at improving students' ability to read and understand various English articles written by native speakers of English. In order to accomplish this goal, students will (1) read English passages from various cultural backgrounds and genres, (2) learn English vocabularies and expressions, and (3) improve their comprehension ability in terms of cultures and contexts. This will help students deepen their understanding of human cultures and lives as well as their knowledge of English.
  1- 1	SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE 1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.
  1- 1	SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.
  1- 1	THE INTRODUCTION OF ENGLISH AND AMERICAN POETRY This course aims to make students attain a liberal refined education and feel delight in reading English poems, by introducing typical lyric poems of major poets.
  1- 1	UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH LINGUISTICS Understaning of English Linguistics is a course designed to introduce students to linguistic features of the English language. In this course, we will cover general linguistic fields in English such as English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and historical linguistics. Throughout the class, students are expected to understand general properties of the English language.
  1- 2	BRITISH AND AMERICAN CULTURES AND SOCIETIES This course is an overview of British and American cultures, which will help understand the constitution of the societies and the usage of the English language. Historical developments are also examined that have contributed to the formation of contemporary British and American cultures.
  1- 2	CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."
  1- 2	SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.
  1- 2	SOFTWARE AND AI Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.
  1- 2	INTRODUCTION TO BRITISH AND AMERICAN THEATRE In this course students are expected to gain a rather wide and concrete understanding about the essence of tragedy and comedy as well as the process in which they developed in the British and American history of drama.
  1- 2	UNDERSTANDING BRITISH AND AMERICAN NOVELS This course is an introduction to the novel as a literary genre. The British and American novelists are surveyed: major novels of the 19th and 20th centuries, along with their backgrounds, are briefly discussed. For some short stories, in particular, detailed reading in English is required in order to improve the English reading skill.

  2- 1	19TH CENTURY BRITISH NOVEL Intensive readings of major British fiction of 19th century, including novels by Walter Scott, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, W. Thackery, Emily and Charlott Bronte, G.Eliot, G .G. Meredith, T. Hardy, S. Butler. Emphasis will be upon the study of the development of the novel in technique and ideas, and also the social cultural, and historical background in this period.
  2- 1	ENGLISH CONVERSATION I Questions are given to students to read and to be answered by other students to accustom students to understanding less than perfect pronunciation patterns, which they will meet in the outside business world.
  2- 1	HISTORY OF BRITISH LITERATURE Gives major authors particular attention, but also seeks to portray the larger British and Irish literary, cultural and intellectual landscape.
  2- 1	PRACTICE IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR This course is designed to help students enhance their grammatical and discourse competence. It deals with forms, meanings and functions of sentences. It focuses on the understanding of grammatical rules and their application in context.
  2- 2	ENGLISH CONVERSATION II Emphasis on English conversation, with frequent practice of sentence and question patterns.
  2- 2	ENGLISH LEARNING METHODOLOGY This course provides a learner-centered approach to English language learning rather than English language teaching. It provides principles for learning listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary skills and a wide range of language laerning tasks such as four language skills coupled with grammar and vocabulary learning tasks. These tasks will help students to improve their English ability.
  2- 2	ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION AND PRACTICE English phonetics and phonology : Theory and practicum is a course designed to introduce students to the various facets of phonetic and phonological investigation of English. This course will cover the basics of English phonetics such as stress, place and manner of articulation as they are relevant to the realization of phonological regularity of English. The first part of the course will focus on theoretical backgrounds of articulatory phonetics and phonology and the latter part will work on the ability to pronounce English, correctly and smoothly.
  2- 2	HISTORY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE Offers a wide view of American literary history and studies such writers as Emerson, Thoreau, Poe, Hawthorn, James, and others from Romanticism through Realism to Naturalism.

  3- 1	18TH CENTURY BRITISH NOVEL This course will investigate the ways in which the novel achieved generic form and the development of certain techniques. Readings will include the works of Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollett and Laurence Sterne.
  3- 1	AMERICAN DRAMA AND MUSICAL This course is designed to help students analyze and discuss modern American musicals and dramas; and examine history of American musical and theater.
  3- 1	ENGLISH FOR GLOBAL CULTURAL CONTENT & AIR SERVICE This course aims to help the students who pursue a career in the fields of global cultural content or air service achieve required English skills, global etiquette, and knowledge of global cultural content.
  3- 1	ENGLISH SENTENCE STRUCTURE This course is about some basic (syntactic) principles that govern the English sentence structure or the English basic word order. It studies how English words form English phrases and sentences, and how to judge whether a particular English phrase or sentence is correct. The theoretical framework the course adopts is the generative grammar framework. (MAJOR OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION - From 2008) This course is about some basic (syntactic) principles that govern the English sentence structure or the English basic word order. It studies how words form phrases and sentences, and how to judge whether a particular phrase or sentence is correct. The theoretical framework the course adopts is the generative grammar framework.
  3- 1	MODERN AMERICAN NOVEL This course aims to analyze the representative modern American novels dating from the early American period to the 19th century. The major writers to be discussed are Poe, Irving, Hawthorne, Melville, and Gilman. Some of the representative short stories will be discussed. Along with this, the nature of Romanticism and Realism will be explored.
  3- 1	ENGLISH COMPOSITION I The purpose of this course is to improve basic English writing skills by means of frequent writing practice on a variety of topics. Attention is paid to paragraph and essay structure, different writing modes, grammar and vocabulary.
  3- 2	ENGLISH AND AMERICAN POETRY IN RECENT PERIOD This course is designed to survey the representative works of the major poets from 17th-century to Romantic Period in the early 19th-century. An emphasis will be given to Metaphysical poets, John Milton, John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Romantic poets: William Blake, William Wordsworth, John Keats and so on.
  3- 2	ENGLISH COMPOSITION II To enhance proficiency in the process of writing in English, longer compositions in different modes are written and analyzed. Elements of structure, clarity of expression and grammar are further developed.
  3- 2	ENGLISH ON CINEMA This course is designed to enhance students' ability of speaking and listening in English by studying dialogues in British and American movies.
  3- 2	ENGLISH SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND MEANING This course is about the meaning of English sentence structure and utterance. When English sentences are uttered in discourse contexts, the meaning of the utterance of an English sentence is determined by the interaction of the following: word meaning, the meaning determined by sentence structure, and the meaning triggered by discourse or pragmatic contexts. The course studies how each meaning is obtained and why a particular (sentence) utterance may or may not be felicitous in actual discourse contexts.
  3- 2	ENGLISH SYNTAX ANALYSES AND APPLICATIONS This course covers the internal structure of English phrases and sentences and thus helps students prepare for various English tests. Specifically, this lecture is designed to help English learners study English reading and composition, and prepare for authorized English tests by solving actual questions about the English syntactic structure.
  3- 2	MATERIALS AND METHODS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION Organization of English teaching material and methods in Second school.
  3- 2	MODERN BRITISH DRAMA AND MUSICAL Works of representative modern British dramatists such as Shaw, Synge, Osborne, and Pinter will be studied.
  3- 2	SHAKESPEARE ON SCREEN This course is designed to help students to understand Shakespeare, arguably the single most influential author in the history of English literature. Shakespeare offers an optimal discoursive site for the investigation of the Renaissance, drama and theatre, and modern culture. Students will read a selection of representative plays in the Shakespeare canon, preferably from each distinctive genre of comedy, tragedy and history. Attention is also given to Shakespeare's afterlife in painting, theatre, film and visual culture as well as in other literary texts.
  3- 2	WESTERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT 1. to do research about jobs directly relevant to the majors in English, French and German languages and literatures, and to foster professionalism. 2. to obtain professional skills through detailed teachings about resume writing, communication and presentation skills; and to help the students find fields appropriate to their talent and skills in the job world and set up a long-term plan for career development. 3. to introduce students essential and practical knowledge on EU-connected institutions and English, French and German business branches established in Korea and to help students effectively search for jobs in the fields of journalism, marketing and cultural content related tourism.

  4- 1	20TH CENTURY BRITISH NOVEL This course focuses on readings of 20th century English novels which characterize modernism in both theme and technique. Particular emphasis is placed on the works of Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and D. H. Lawrence.
  4- 1	ASIAN AMERICAN LITERATURE AND FILM This course aims to examine the rich history and experience of Asian Americans. It will introduce historically significant experiences of Asian Americans; critically investigate visual representations of Asian Americans in American visual media focusing on their formative roles and effects; analyze a range of literary and visual productions created by Asian Americans.
  4- 1	BRITISH & AMERICAN LITERARY CRITICISM This course is designed for the introduction of the literary/cultural revolutionary theories developed in West since the 1960s. Stress will be on structuralism, psychoanalysis, and feminism among other things. There will also be some occasions to apply those theories to a variety of cultural artifacts including literary works, films, and commercial ads. The final aim of this course is to provide students with some theoretical tools in order to appreciate cultural works critically in the age of mass culture.
  4- 1	BRITISH AND AMERICAN CHILDREN'S LITERATURE This course is designed to survey the representative works of the major writers of children's stories. An emphasis will be given to Lewis Carroll, Oscar Wilde and J.K. Rowlings.

  4- 1	LOGIC AND ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY WRITING IN ENGLISH EDUCATION This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to write about a variety of controversial issues in the field of English education so that the students can enhance their writing competence, integrating critical, logical thinking, analytic ability, and reasoning powers. In order to help students cope adequately with the English essay writing task in the Exam for the License of Teachers, this course presents a variety of theories and skills in the field of TESOL, which ultimately helps them to enrich their background knowledge. It also provides them with an opportunity to practice expressing their opinions logically and systematically on the basis of logic. In addition, this course deals with the development of a topic statement, discourse cohesion and coherence, and rhetorical structure, etc. Teaching methods employed in this course focus on the presentation and discussion of argumentative essays. The teacher should give relevant feedback on the essay writings.
  4- 1	PHONETIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH SPEECH Phonetic Analysis of English Speech is a course designed to introduce the methods for the acoustic analysis of English speech. Using speech analysis tools such as Praat that provides visual displays of both segmental and prosodic features of English, you will learn how to collect and analyze acoustic speech data and how to account for properties of the English segments and phonological variations.
  4- 1	PRACTICAL ENGLISH The purpose of the course is to help students improve reading skills and build English vocabulary in practical terms. It is intended for students who need to achieve a high score for the reading comprehension section. The course will teach students practical English vocabulary to improve their comprehension of various passages based on real-life experiences. It will also provide background knowledge through multi-media to improve students’ comprehension of academic reading passages. Students will check their learning through reading comprehension exercises.
  4- 2	AMERICAN AND BRITISH POETRY IN THE 20TH CENTURY This course is an overview of American and British poetry in the twentieth century from a historical context including close readings of selective representative works.
  4- 2	CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN NOVEL This course aims to analyze the representative modern American novels dating from the 20the century to the contemporary age. Particular emphasis is placed on the works of Hemingway, Faulkner, Silko, and DeLillo. Some of the representative short stories will be discussed. Along with this, the nature of Modernism and Postmodernism will be explored.
  4- 2	ENGLISH INTERVIEW PRACTICE This course aims to help students improve their interview skills in English. It provides students with an opportunity to express their ideas and opinions about given interview questions so that students can enhance their speaking ability. It also provides students with an opportunity to learn from a good model interview and have individual and group interviews in real-life situations.
  4- 2	SPECIAL TOPICS IN ENGLISH LITERATURE The concept of English literature has been broadened to include literature produced in Anglophone countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa, and many others, and even literature written in the English language. This course will examine literary works and subjects selected from a variety of works and subjects currently discussed in the field of English literature. Therefore, it aims to provide various ways to study English literature and develop a deeper understanding of it through an extensive or intensive approach.
