Introduction
The Department of Political Science and Diplomacy aims to accomplish two primary goals:
- To enhance the virtues of democratic citizenship
- To promote leadership
The department designs curriculum focusing on the following programs.
First, education on leadership is specialized. The department offers courses aimed at promoting leadership not only in public spheres such as politics or public organizations, but also in private sectors such as civil organizations or private corporations.
Second, the department aims to combine theory with practice. It not only offers traditional courses focusing on various political theories, But also provides courses that encourage students to experience society and politics in the real world.
Third, the department strongly supports student activities. In so doing, it strives to establish close linkage between these activities and students’ education. Moreover, the department offers leadership colloquium for the purpose of promoting global leadership and analytical skills.
History
The Department of Political Science and Diplomacy, Yeungnam University, was first established at Daegu University in October 1947 and is one of the oldest departments. Then, Yeungnam University was established through the integration of Daegu University and Cheonggu University in 1967. At that time, the department belonged to the College of Law and Political Science, Yeungnam University. After 1987, however, the department was transferred to the College of Political Science and Public Administration. In 1971, the department was established for evening programs. The department began to offer M. A. program in 1967 and Ph. D. program in 1972. As of March 2007, 2,198 students completed B.A. degrees (including 286 from Daegu University), 106 students completed M.A. degrees (including 8 from Daegu University), and 22 students completed Ph. D. degrees. The department also offered 5 honorary Ph. D. degrees.

CurriculumThis table demonstrates the curriculum accroding to academic year. 1- 1 - CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
- The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."
1- 1 - SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
- 1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.
1- 1 - SOFTWARE AND AI
- Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.
1- 2 - LAW OF LIFE
- This course is designed to introduce students fundamental legal concepts and skills which are useful in relating various legal troubles arising in our daily life. This curriculum deals with major cases relating to civil law, commercial law, criminal law, and constitutional law.
1- 2 - SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
- This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

- The purpose of this course is to enhance understanding of current politics and to promote English skill. This course will utilize English newspapers which deal with hot topics in current politics.
2- 1 - GENDER POLITICS
- This course grasps gender issues as a political process which form the relationship of male/female and deals with several theories. This course tries to analyse many theories and debates on gender politics, for example, liberalist feminism, radical feminism, marxist feminism, psychoanalytical feminism, queer theory, eco feminism, post-colonialist feminism. And sexual equality issue will be treated with relation of the issues on patriarchal family, sexuality, state, citizenship, democracy.
2- 1 - KOREAN DIPLOMATIC HISTORY
- Study of Korean diplomatic history from the opening of Korea in the latter half of the 19th century of Korean War in 1945.

- Study of theories of comparative politics and its methodology ; types of political systems, governments, and political process.

- A historical inquiry into international relations from the Congress of Vienna up to World War II. Special emphasis on the process of the formation of modern nation-state system.

- In this course, students will learn various meanings and dimensions of power, the key concept in political science. Also, students will discuss leadership questions, e.g., how to acquire and exercise leadership, what kind of leadership is required in this society, etc.

- Study of political traditions, political systems, political processes, and problems in the United States.

- The purpose of this course is to enhance understanding of international relations, promote English skill, and ultimately cultivate international mind. This course will utilize English newspapers which deal with hot topics in the area of international relations.
2- 2 - EUROPEAN POLITICS
- Study of European politics and governments. Europe is the most important region in the development of theories and concepts of political science such as democracy and modernization. This course introduces basic facts about major European governments, especially Britain, France, Germany, and Italy. The course focuses on the political institutions and political economy in these countries in the postwar period, i.e., after the Second Word War.
2- 2 - POLITICS AND ECONOMY
- This course on Politics and Economy explores the interactive relationship between politics and economics. More specifically, this course discuses the substantial categories of capitalist economy--such as commodity, money, and capital--and political construction of market as well. In addition, this course analyses the main characteristics, operating rules and crisis of the political economic systems such as liberalism, fascism, real existing socialism, welfare capitalism, dictatorship of economic development, and neo-liberalism that come out in the 20th century.
2- 2 - INTERNATIONAL POLITICS
- Study of various factors of international relationships; general theories for understanding national society and international political phenomena.

- A survey of North Korean Politics, ; the structure of its political system, ideology and major policies.

- Reading of major classics in political science. This course provides in-depth reading of major classics of political science, and analyzes the major concepts and ideas in those classics. By carefully reading the classics, the course trains students to think originally and creatively.
3- 2 - SEMINAR ON WAR AND PEACE
- This class provides an introduction to the major wars of the 20th and 21st centuries including their impacts on the international politics and world order. It also pays attention to the direct political causes of wars focusing on the historical perspectives of the international contexts of wars. Students will be invited to the discussions on the political, economic, and military relations of the outbreaks of wars and the alternative solutions of avoiding wars and achieving substantial peace for the world.

- Analysis of the political of china from various perspectives; political traditions, ideology, political systems, and foreign relations.
4- 1 - HUMAN RIGHTS AND POLITICS
- This course on Human Rights and Politics comprises three parts: Theories on Human Rights, Human Rights and National Violence, and Human Rights and Global Politics. The first chapter on this course--Theories on Human Rights--deals with various ranges of classical, modern and critical theories. The second chapter on this class--Human Rights and National Violence--explores historical case studies--including the Korean case--regarding the human rights violation. The last chapter on the course discuses how the issues on Human Rights rise to the surface as a main topic of the global politics.
4- 1 - KOREAN POLITICAL THOUGHT
- Reading of major classics in Korean political thought. The student will learn the master philosophers in Korea and learn through their teachings structure of Korean society and culture that ruled over Korean lives during the Chosen Dynasty to present.
4- 1 - LEADERSHIP INTERNSHIP I
- This course is an internship program to learn and practice leadership skills through field activities in political parties, mass media, private corporations, and/or civil organizations.
4- 1 - RELATIONS BETWEEN SOUTH AND NORTH KOREA
- This course examines the historical evolution of the inter-Korean relations since the division of the Korean peninsula in 1945. The main topics include: the division of the Korean peninsula and the reunification question of the North and the South; the ups and downs of hostile and friendly relations, or cooperative and conflictual interactions between the two Koreas; the changes in the two governments’ respective policies towards each other; and, in particular, the influence of the global politics and/or international relations on the North East Asian regional level upon the relations between the two Koreas.
4- 1 - SEMINAR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE
- In this course students will exercise writing, reviewing, presenting, and submitting a graduation thesis on political science.
4- 1 - SOCIAL STUDIES-LOGICS AND DISCOURSES
- Students in this course will examine diverse perspectives and theories in the various academic disciplines that are related to the social studies such as political science, economics, sociology, law, anthropolgy, geography and history. They will also study the unique characteristics and logics of the social studies subjects that are taught in the secondary school. This course thus aims to help students develop abilities to hold discourses with others in one's own logic.

- This course examines contemporary international relations. It first introduces theories of international relations and then investigates whether these theories are useful in understanding contemporary international relations. By doing this, the course attempts to improve students' critical thinking about international relations.
4- 2 - CULTURE AND POLITICS
- This course studies on the theoretical background and political meanings it represented in which the theme of 'cultural politics' and discourse of cultural-politics, multi-culturalism. This course tries to analyse and interpret the meaning of many texts of art, for instance, music, paintings, sculptures, architectures, pictures, film and so on.
4- 2 - LEADERSHIP INTERNSHIP II
- This course is a sequel to Leadership Internship Ⅰ. It aims to further develop leadership of students by offering them opportunities to receive practical training in corporations, civil organizations and/or public institutions.
4- 2 - SEMINAR ON GEOPOLITICS
- In this course students will study modern geopolitics, a subfield of International Relations, and analyze and evaluate critically current geopolitical issues and strategies. To begin with, they will study basic concepts and theories of modern geopolitics, from classical to critical geopolitics. Then, they will review the main geopolitical strategies and imaginations of major powers including the United States, Russia, Japan, and China. Finally, students will try to build their own geopolitical strategies and imaginations from the perspective of Korea and/or the Korean peninsula.
