Introduction

The educational objective of Department of Psychology is to provide students with a broad exposure to the behavioral sciences with a focus on both basic and practical knowledge used in contemporary psychological research. The department provides a variety of courses and training so that students can acquire rational, creative and positive knowledge on human mind and behavior.

The curriculum focuses on providing students with chances to develop creativity, critical thinking and social skills. Our mission is to prepare undergraduate students a career in psychology either in basic research, or in any number of professional applications to various human problems.

Our graduate program in psychology is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to become active contributors to research, teaching and public service.

History

Department of Psychology was formed on October 7, 1978 in the College of Liberal Arts. The first freshmen were recruited in 1979 and the first graduates were turned out in 1983. For graduate educations, the master course was opened in 1985 and the Ph. D. course was opened in 2000. The facilities of department were moved from the Liberal Arts Hall to the general lecture building in 1986. Currently, there are five laboratories in the department: Biological Psychology, Health Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Counseling Psychology.

    COMMUNICATION SKILL
    The ability to communicate effectively in speaking and writing is one of the most important skills for educational and career success. This course gives students opportunities to discuss, practice, and eventually master the skills involved in oral and written communication. The topics include theory and practice of effective communication, making speeches, presentation skills, principles of persuasion, and writing skills.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    UNDERSTANDING OF PSYCHOLOGY
    The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the scientific understanding of human behavior and mind. Topics will include the biological basis of behavior, learning and memory, social behavior, human development, and individual differences. Throughout the course, we will examine both the basic concepts and major findings of contemporary psychology. This course is designed to help students both understand their own thinking and behavior.

    INTRODUCTION TO BRAIN AND MIND
    This course aims to introduce to the interdisciplinary field of neuroscience focusing on the cognitive neuroscience. This course explores the cognitive and neural processes that support 1. basic human cognition such as attention, vision, motor control and memory 2. higher cognition such as language and emotion. This course introduces basic neuroanatomy, important methods and findings related with the brain functions and cognitive processes. This course also cover various evidences from various methods such as neurophysiological methods, studies on normal human participants and brain-damaged patients, and functional imaging. The final goal of this course is to 1. help you understand the key issues and principles of neuroscience and human cognitive processes and 2. improve your critical thinking and scientific creativity.

    SKILLS IN LIFE
    The person is a creative organism which seeks out a valuable life against the unpredictable future. Setting the life-orientation and search for value could be possible only through overcoming the obstacles within the environment and positive relationship with the world. But many people have the problems that the life value and the goal is misleading because of the suffering of past and future. in this course we try to facilitate a new experience by understanding the obstacles and increase an ability to emotion regulation. Life-Skills are learned by an experience of the real self and calming relationship with the world. This course is constructed of theories and practice so that the students need to be an active participation.

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
    Topics cover higher mental processes such as attention, memory, inference, and problem solving; Emphasizing information processing approach and everyday cognition.

    PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY
    Physiological psychology is a interdisciplinary field concerned with understanding the relationship between brain, mind, and behavior. This course provides an introduction to biopsychology, with special emphasis on the basic structure and function of nervous system underlying behavior.

    PSYCHOLOGICAL STATISTICS
    This study is the application of statistics to psychology. In this course, we will introduce students to the basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics. Futhermore, it will cover the collection and analysis of data, and the design of experimental and quasi-experimental study.

    This course covers theories and therapists in counseling psychology.

    PSYCHOLOGY OF PERSONALITY
    This course introduces the general aspects of personality psychology. Topics may include theories of personality, ranging from Freudian perspectives to current theory, personality assessment and test, and recent findings on personality processes and individual differences. Students would gain a good understanding of research methods and finding of personality from scientific approach.

    SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
    This course teaches the nature and basic concepts of social psychology and the history of its' development. It also examines the socialization process of the individual, interpersonal relations, interactions, and collective behavior in the society. The focus of the course is to understand socio-psychological processes from psychological perspective.

    ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY
    It is important to understand the process of causes, development and therapeutic effect of maladaptive behavior which could be treated effectively. In this course we will study various aspect of psychological disorders of DSM-VI. The purpose of the course is to help students to understand psychological disorders.

    DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY
    The field of developmental psychology has four major concerns : (a) to identify and describe the changes that occur across the human life span, (b) to explain these changes, (c) to predict occurrences in human development, and (d) to intervene in the course of events in order to control them. Developmental psychology offers an opportunity to think critically about social issues and how these issues relate to their personal lives and world.

    The course is to promote the stability of the family through a right understanding and to teach coping strategies for various crises in the family.

    INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
    This class emphasizes diverse perspectives that focuses on the application of forensic psychological knowledge and research. The class includes emerging specializations within forensic psychology, including investigative/criminal psychology, family forensic psychology, police and public safety psychology, risk assessment, correctional psychology, consulting and testifying, victimology and victim services, and juvenile justice and correction.     POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
    Positive psychology is a new and expanding field focused on the empirical study of positive individual traits, positive subjective experience and positive institutions in order to flourish individual and thrive community. This course will provide an introduction of positive psychology and give an special focus on gaining a better understanding of human strengths and how to facilitate them.

    PSYCHOLOGY OF LEARNING
    This course surveys theories and researches in learning and examines the applications of principles of learning to contemporary settings. Among the topics covered are Pavlovian and operant conditioning, generalization and discrimination, schedules of reinforcement.

    YOUTH COUNSELING
    Adolescence is a transitional period from childhood to adulthood, in which developmental specificity and psychological adaptation problems arise. This subject focuses on developmental specificity and physical, cognitive, emotional and social relationships, and gender identity, values, interpersonal problem to understand the characteristics of adolescence. Also, it includes counseling to treat clients who suffer from psychological disorder and maladjustment.

    CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
    Examination of major theoretical and historical themes in the development of modern clinical psychology, with special attention to concepts of mental health and psychopathology, models of intervention and clinical research, and emerging professional roles and institutions.

    CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY & DELINQUENCY
    This class introduces research and application in domestic and international perspectives on criminal psychology and delinquency. Specifically, it focuses on interesting issues such as aggression, psychopathy, juvenile delinquency, mental illness and crime, sexual violence, homicide, domestic violence, arson, and in-discriminant violence. Additionally, the class also includes diversity of cases such as serial murderers, single-offender-victim-homicide cases, sexual homicides, serious adolescent crimes, and domestic violence with IPV.     The purpose of this course is to provide students with the primary theoretical bases as well as the essential knowledge and skills for understanding, organizing, and working with groups within the counseling field.

    COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
    This course aims at introducing the students to the interdisciplinary field of cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive neuroscience is the study of higher cognitive functions in humans and its underlying neural bases. By definition, it is an integrative area of study drawing principally from cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics.     CRIMINAL PROFILING AND INVESTIGATIVE PSYCHOLOGY
    This class introduces research and application in domestic and international perspectives on criminal psychology. Specifically, it focuses on interesting issues such as criminal profiling, linkage analysis, homicide, serial homicide, mentally ill offence, psychopathy, risk assessment, psychological autopsy, statement validity analysis of the suspects, interrogation strategies in law enforcement, cognitive interview after formal apprehension. Additionally, the class also includes cold-case profiling, questioning as a testifier, negotiation, and profiling in court.     DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOPATHOLOGY
    Childhood and adolescence are imperative periods of psychological and social development alongside physical changes, and it is also prone to various psychological difficulties. This course will help students to understand children and adolescents with behavioral, cognitive, and socioemotive problems and investigate psychological approaches to assessment and interventions for them. In particular, the mechanisms of each disorder will be studied by exploring risk and protective factors that influence the onset and course of psychopathology.

    This course is an introduction to the basic nature of experiment and its application to psychological research. Topics include research problems and hypothesis, experimental techniques and methodology as applied to various areas of psychology, but the emphasis is on lab experiments.

    Gerontopsychology is a field of psychology focusing on explaining about age-related psychological behavior such as physiological, cognitive and emotional changes at aging. This lecture aims at the understanding how the psychological behavior interacts with environmental conditions at aging and the factors influences the cognitive, socialenvironmental and emotional changes of human lifespan development.

    This course is offered for students who have already studied industrial and Organizational Psychology. Students are encouraged to select on-site learning organization : IT or BT companies, manufacturing, distribution, service organizations as well as hospitals and government organizations. Students have opportunity to get on the job train which they choose.

    This course aims at establishing practical experiences at applied areas of cognitive psychology. Main goals of this course include but not limit applying cognitive psychology to educational practice and to human-machine interface.     The course deals with the applied fields of psychology to various organizations. Since peoples' issues people in organizations became acute and serious in our society, new paradigm recognizing the importance human issues related to the industrial psychology emerged. The topics of this course include personnel selection, job analysis, work design and organizational change. This course is also connected with organizational psychology.
